‘You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty’ – Mahatma Gandhi
There are some shitbags in this world. And I’m not talking Nazi SS soldiers or members of ISIS, I mean your common or garden community shitbags. The kind of people who shout abuse at the elderly, the obese, the racial ethnicity. The type of shitbag who, when Alan Barnes, a disabled and visually impaired pensioner (pictured) was innocently going about his business taking his bins in last Sunday, was knocked the ground and demanded handed over whatever money he had.
He didn’t have any money on him (as I don’t, when I’m putting the bins out) so this particular shitbag fled the scene, leaving Mr Barnes with nothing but a broken collarbone. Oh, and the inability to leave his house ever again.
There’s a little epilogue to this tale of sadness, as in steps the angel that is Katie Cutler, who, reading this story, set up a GoFundMe page hoping to raise £500 or so to help Mr Barnes move. That GoFundMe page has now reached £184,893 (as of 10pm on 31st January) £184,893. That’s astonishing! And what a fucking amazing society we live in that we can turn the actions of one shitbag into something so positive.
In a month that has shown us decapitations by ISIS, cartoonists being assassinated for freedom of speech and the 70 year anniversary of the liberation of Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz, this warms the very core of my soul. There ARE good people out there, there IS community spirit still alive, and we WILL prevail over the shitbags of this world.
