The 2016 US Presidential Election through the eyes of an American

‘People love me. And you know what, I have been very successful. Everybody loves me’ – Donald Trump

Wow. What a week eh? I’ll be perfectly honest I was in two minds about this weeks US Presidential Election. I wanted with all my heart and soul for Hillary to win, for the first black president to be followed by the first female president. I know she wasn’t perfect but she was a million miles away from the racist, sexist, bigoted reality TV douchewaffle Trump. However before we went to sleep on Tuesday night i said to said to Dave ‘I have this horrible feeling we’re going to wake up tomorrow morning and Tina (radio 1 newsreader) is going to tell us Donald Trump is president’. After Brexit and the Great British Bake Off moving to channel 4, nothing surprised me anymore.

And then what happened happened and we all had our say about it at work, on Facebook and with friends over the following couple of days. But what did it feel like to be a bonafide, real life American who has to live in the mess of the follow through of a massive Trump?

Here’s the Taylor Swift-like range of emotions that my best mate Meagan went trough as she watched it unfold live:

8:20 AM – 8 Nov 2016 – Meagan Morris was voting in the U.S. Election.

8:39 AM – 8 Nov 2016 – It’s go time, America. Let’s not fork this up.

8:41 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – RT:  @MikeRoyce This is definitely my least favorite episode of Black Mirror

8:53 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – You’re forking up, America. 😡😡😡😡😡

8:56 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – I’m going to cry or puke. Probably both. I can’t even process this.

9:09 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – America…… smh

9:26 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – You are the company you keep. I’ll never be a part of this group. #ImWithHer

9:45 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – RT: @Maukingbird EVERY WOMAN they interview on NBC News who voted for Trump says it was because “he tells it like it is.” EVERY WOMAN. WHAT IS IT LIKE?!?!?!

9:58 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – RT: @Paxmee Tell me again how rape and sexual assault accusations will ruin a man’s career

12:48 PM – 8 Nov 2016 – @Bookworm_Bev @honestlyhelen @Big_Dave_W I can’t believe this is real.

6:53 AM – 9 Nov 2016 – You reap what you sow

7:03 AM – 9 Nov 2016 – He’s not my president. Never will be.

8:13 AM – 9 Nov 2016 – This is the person now in charge of the nuclear codes. #goodjobamerica

11:17 AM – 9 Nov 2016 – He’s going to show the people who voted for him that he’s not like them, he’s not for them, and he’s not going to do anything he promised.

11:28 AM – 9 Nov 2016  – He’s going to show the people who voted for him that he’s not like them, he’s not for them. He kept making up outlandish things to appease people who came to his rallies. To get press. Now they’re going to want these things he promised.
He expected to ride the wave of a “rigged election” to announce Trump TV. And he never thought he’d have to answer to them because he didn’t think it would go this far. What happens when his ass can’t cash the check his mouth wrote?

12:07 PM – 9 Nov 2016

wp-1478952606084.png

3:15 PM – 9 Nov 2016 – “Give Trump a chance!” Oh, as much of a chance you gave Obama? K.

9:15 PM – 10 Nov 2016 – “FML.” — me, every day for the next four years

1:32pm – 11 Nov 2016 – I’ve been on a Phil Collins kick all week. His voice is like a blanket for a worried mind.

One can only imagine that there were less people that voted in this election than the last, that neither candidate was up to the job so they just didn’t bother, which is a shame. There’s too many people getting their information from Facebook in my opinion. The people you’re friends with on Facebook are most likely to have similar political views to you, so they’re going to share and post the articles that support their cause, so you’re not really getting the full picture to formulate an informed decision.

But you know what? That’s democracy. More people wanted Trump as president and that’s exactly what they got.
