The 11:11 Theory

I love conspiracy theories. I used to just live on it. You know it’s all hype and garbage, but you’re still really paranoid afterwards’ – Doug Stanhope

I’m not usually one of conspiracy theories. Similarly, I’m not a massive believer of coincidence either, I mean sure there are things where you think ‘wow that’s spooky’ like for example when my dad and I were watching TV and he told me about some free batteries he got and then the person on the TV said, at the exact right time ‘free eh?’ as if he was part of the conversation. That, I will concede was a massive coincidence.

I am however a big believer of the power of the subconscious, subtleties of body language and unspoken communication. I’ll give you two genuine things that have happened to me as an example (bear with me, this is going somewhere I promise!)…

I once went to the cinema with a friend and caught a whiff of their perfume or body spray, which I wasn’t a massive fan of. I didn’t say anything; we watched the film then went home. The next day they texted me and said ‘I had a dream last night that you told me I smelt’ – no way?!

Another time Dave and I had booked our wedding venue and date and were in a local pub celebrating. We hadn’t told anyone the date or the venue at that point and whilst in the pub I got a text from a different friend saying they’d had a dream the previous night we set our wedding date. There was no way she could have known what we were up to that day. Woah!  Those two things are too spooky to just be written off as coincidence right?

In more recent years me and my friend Cheryl, who used to sit next to each other at work, always marveled at the fact that almost on a daily basis she would check her phone and it would be sequential numbers. Usually 10:10 or 13:13 – and I saw this happen on a regular basis. There must be something subconsciously in her body clock that makes her check her phone at those times. Then my friend Linda told me she always sees 11:11 on her phone (which is a thing apparently) and now I keep on seeing 11:11 on my phone too and I genuinely am starting to believe that I’m now involved in some kind of numerology voodoo that I can’t escape!

The theory around 11:11 is that numerologists believe that 11:11 appears in daily life, events, and timings of things etc too frequently to just be pure chance. Some researchers believe that seeing 11:11 on a clock is lucky whilst others believe it’s linked to the spirit world (something I buy into even less). The date 11/11/11 skyrocketed in terms of people wanting to get married apparently because they deemed it lucky, babies born on this date in Asia received wide media coverage and of course Armistice day occurred on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. There was even a film released in 2014 about the theory (called I Origins) which gets 7.3/10 on IMDB incidentally so even Hollywood know what’s up, and everyone knows that’s as reliable a source as anything.

I’ve even been seeing 11:11 in car parks!

Apparently you can go through stages of seeing it regularly, then weeks or months without seeing it at all, suggesting you are experiencing a higher state of consciousness and are more in tune with yourself and the universe around you (I quite like that theory – alert isn’t a word often used to describe me) when it occurs. I know all of this sounds crazy but I feel like now I’ve been alerted to the phenomenon, I’ve started seeing it even more and I wonder if now you know about it too, you’ll start seeing it too. If you do please let me know because it’s so fascinating I’m worried it might turn me as loopy as Noel Edmonds.

I’ll leave you with this: even most clever scientific minds in the world know that there’s a bout a 2% chance that whatever they’re studying isn’t quantifiable. So stuff like unicorns or magic can never be truly ruled out (but can be more probably put down to random variance). So if I were to consider myself scientist (I do experiment with wine a lot) then I think I have to believe that there a few things that we’re just not supposed to know the answer to.

So I still see 11:11 all the time and I choose to believe that’s believe I’m a superior being than most (ahem)
