The perfect pick n mix

I never realised how controversial the humble pick n mix could be until I started asking people about it. I’ve always preferred ‘ket’ as it’ called in the north east, over chocolate. I mean, I like chocolate but the faster the sugar can make it into my bloodstream the better. So give me some jelly crap any day! Let’s be honest it was all Woolworths was good for (that and selling the first Savage Garden album a fiver cheaper than anywhere else I seem to remember) but they were pioneers in both quality and quantity. Once cinema chains entered the arena the gloves were off and suddenly I was dropping £14 to gnaw on through Open Water in 2003.

The humble pick n mix is a dying art and it’s about time it made a come back. There are quite a few online retailers who offer pick n mix options now, marketed as ‘retro sweets’ – rude. But all the trip down memory lane has done is make me think about what the ultimate pick n mix would be. To me at least, because this is purely objective. I also roped in Dave and Emma to the experiment to see how different our choices would be, and whether there were any common favourites. The rules are, you get a choice of ten items, and a couple of overflows, in case those ten items happened to be discontinued or suddenly illegal like blue smarties.

So, assuming that all things are available at any given time, here’s my top ten (in no particular order)

  • Those green frogs that have the white foamy bit underneath
  • Milk bottles
  • Foam bananas
  • Candy sticks
  • Strawberry laces
  • Cola bottles
  • Mini cables (with the white stuff in the middle)
  • Chocolate crispy bites
  • Jelly cherries
  • Dracula teeth

Overflows:

  • Foam prawns
  • Fried eggs
  • Giant strawbs

So I’m very much on the fruity/chewy side of things, whereas Emma is a fan of all things fizzy:

  • Blue and pink fizzy bottles
  • Mini cables
  • Giant strawbs
  • Fizzy keys
  • Any kind of Haribo
  • Gummy snakes
  • Strawberry laces
  • Teeth and lips
  • Giant cola bottles
  • Fizzy cherries

And Dave is quite frankly feral with his choices:

  • Giant cables
  • White mice
  • Chocolate covered raisins
  • Flumps
  • Fried eggs
  • Fizzy cola bottles
  • Jelly babies
  • Fizzy dummies
  • Sugar strawberries
  • Fudge

Fudge? FUDGE? That’s madness, weight of that on the scales this guy must have money to burn. Perhaps, as it turns out, our pick n mix preferences are as unique as our fingerprints, no two top tens are the same. One thing’s sure sure though, everybody loves a cable!
